If you choose to fly to Chicago for your visit, there are two major commercial airports in the Chicago area: O’Hare International Airport and Midway International Airport.

Midway

Midway International Airport is approximately eight miles west of the University of Chicago campus. Midway is easily accessible from our campus by public transportation, car, shuttle, and taxi.

O’Hare

O’Hare International Airport is approximately 30 miles northwest and is also accessible from our campus by public transportation, shuttle, car, and taxi.

Getting to and from the airports

Public Transit

From Midway Airport, visitors can take a direct 55 bus to our campus in Hyde Park, which takes about 50 minutes. Ride shares from Midway only take about 20-25 minutes to get directly to campus.

From O’Hare, visitors can take the Blue Line to the Loop and transfer at the Jackson Blue Line stop to the 6 or 2 bus to Hyde Park (both run express, but the 2 bus is only active during AM and PM rush hour times). Given the distance, visitors are encouraged to allot an hour and 45 minutes to two hours of travel time for reaching Hyde Park from O’Hare via public transportation. Ride shares from O’Hare to Hyde Park take about 45-50 minutes.

Driving

Midway Airport

From Midway Airport, go north on Cicero Avenue to the Stevenson Expressway (I-55). Take I-55 North to Chicago and exit to Lake Shore Drive South. From Lake Shore Drive, exit at 57th Drive (the Museum of Science and Industry). Go west and curve around the museum. Take the fourth right onto the Midway Plaisance and go west to the campus.

O’Hare Airport

From O’Hare Airport, take I-90 east to Chicago. Once past downtown Chicago, exit to I-55 North and then to Lake Shore Drive South. From Lake Shore Drive, exit at 57th Drive (the Museum of Science and Industry). Go west and curve around the museum. Take the fourth right onto the Midway Plaisance and go west to the campus.

Taxis and Cabs

If you wish to take a taxi from either airport to our campus, simply follow the signs at the airport to the taxi stand. A taxi from O’Hare will cost approximately $60–70, and from Midway the fare will be approximately $30-40.

There are several ways to get a taxi from our campus to the airport:

  • Walk to the taxi stand in front of the University of Chicago Medical Center at the corner of Maryland Avenue and East 58th Street.
  • Call a cab from one of the main Chicago cab companies: Yellow Cab or Checker Cab. They can both be reached by dialing 312.829.4222. Plan to call at least an hour before your pick-up time.
  • Call the Quadrangle Livery Car Service to get a ride to airport. Their phone number is 773.418.8228. You can also email them at quadlivery@hotmail.com. This is a private car service and the rates will be higher than taxi cab rates.
