Athletics for All

The University of Chicago believes that academic and athletic excellence ought to complement each other. From our Big 10 football powerhouse days to our enduring commitment to the scholar-athlete, UChicago boasts a rich history of campus and intercollegiate athletics. And, through twenty varsity sports, over 1,000 intramural teams, nearly 40 club sports, and the state-of-the-art Ratner Athletics Center, we all get in on the action.

Winning Traditions

Now a member of the University Athletic Association (UAA), a Division III athletic conference, the UChicago Maroons compete alongside seven other major research universities in the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic regions: Brandeis University, Carnegie Mellon University, Case Western Reserve University, Emory University, New York University, the University of Rochester, and Washington University. In the past 10 years, UChicago has captured UAA team championships in men’s basketball, women’s basketball, men’s cross country, football, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, women’s tennis, men’s indoor track and field, women’s indoor track and field, and wrestling. The Maroons have also appeared in the men’s and women’s soccer final fours and the men’s basketball sectional championship. Though Division III schools do not offer athletic scholarships, we do recruit student athletes throughout the year. If you are interested in playing on a varsity team, visit the athletics website to fill out the interest form for your respective sport.
