One of the most important things I've learned in my time at UChicago is how to take care of my mental health. It's always good to be mindful of your mental wellbeing and how you're feeling, but it's doubly crucial in college, especially when school, RSOs, and social commitments begin to pile up.
Recognizing how much I actually have to do — and get done — every week is one way to stay mindful even when things get rough. I find it's helpful to give yourself credit and acknowledge when you're doing well or when you're having a tough time, because that ensures you know when you need to lean on your support system a little more.
What I really like about UChicago is the accessibility of Student Counseling Services -- anyone can make an appointment to see a therapist and have the option to take things further in a safe, nonjudgmental space. There are also student- or College-run activities to boost mental wellness and awareness, like Pet Love, movie nights, and guided meditation sessions. Societies like Active Minds are also very mental health-aware, and conferences like Break the Silence open up conversations around mental health each year.
For me, taking care of my mental health regularly looks like scheduling down time alongside study time, making time to hang out with friends, and talking to my therapist. Some other creative ways I've seen have included buying a sun lamp or a plant friend to take care of, too! Mental health awareness and mindfulness can happen all the time, in ways both big and small, and it's important to take time to do things to take care of yourself.
