The University of Chicago welcomes veterans of the United States Armed Forces to apply for admission to the College. If you have completed at least one term at another college or university in a degree-seeking program, you should apply as a transfer student. If not, you should apply as a first-year applicant. Learn more about resources and programs for veterans.
Though the application materials required for veterans are the same as those for other applicants, veteran applicants encounter a few special circumstances.
No Application Fee
The University of Chicago does not charge a college application fee for veterans. Upon submitting your application, please email our office and identify yourself as a veteran applicant and your fee will be waived. If you indicate that you intend to apply for need-based financial aid, your application fee will be waived automatically.
Application for Admission
When filling out the Application for Admission, please complete sections which do not seem directly relevant to your personal, academic, and military experiences to the best of your ability. For example, the application asks about your extracurricular activities, awards, and honors. Veteran applicants should feel free to include military experiences and distinctions, high school experiences, and any other post-secondary experiences in these sections. You are also welcome to attach a resume or CV to explain your non-academic experiences more thoroughly.
If for any reason you cannot acquire all your academic records, we will accept whatever documents you can provide. However, the most competitive applicants tend to demonstrate an academic record that is rigorous and engaged in a wide range of subjects.
Teacher and Other Recommendations
Although we generally require two letters of recommendation from teachers of core academic subjects, we understand the potential difficulty of getting recommendations from high school or college instructors after service in the military. We highly recommend submitting at least one recommendation from a traditional classroom instructor if possible. You may also submit a recommendation from a superior officer to contextualize your military experiences.
Veteran applicants are welcome to submit an SAT or ACT score from a test date within the last eight years.
Some applicants may feel that an SAT or ACT score does not fully reflect their academic preparedness or potential. If this is the case for you, you may select UChicago's test-optional method of application, and not supply an SAT or ACT score with your application. We welcome any student regardless of testing plan to submit additional material that they feel best highlights their skills, talents, and potential contributions to UChicago.
