Transcend the Classroom

More than 400 student organizations flourish on campus. These range from Off-Off Campus, an improvisational comedy group in the tradition of Chicago’s own Second City (which originated at the University of Chicago), to Doc Films, the longest continuously running student film society in the country. Our largest club is University Theater, a student-run theater company that, together with Off-Off Campus, puts on 30 shows a year. Some groups—like Model United Nations, the national champion Debate Society, and the winningest college quizbowl team in the world—have long traditions of awards in regional and national competition. Students organize and run fourteen fraternities and seven sororities, clubs devoted to such varied interests as political economy and modern dance, and volunteer groups such as Alpha Phi Omega and Habitat for Humanity. Others spring up wherever student interests come together, such as JELLY (Jugglers Enriching Lives Like Yours) or Luigi, a club devoted to studying, developing, and designing video games.

Starting your own

Registering a student organization (aptly named a Recognized Student Organization or "RSO," as opposed to a “club”) is easy. Find a few friends, fill out some forms, talk with your adviser in the The Center for Leadership and Involvement, and voila! You’ve just started an RSO.

Some Clubs and Organizations Include...

African and Caribbean Student Association (ACSA)

ACSA seeks to celebrate the unique legacies of African and Caribbean populations by forging relationships of exchange between both of these communities within the College, and by sponsoring year-round cultural and political programming that engages the greater University of Chicago community.

Chicago Shady Dealer

A University of Chicago humor newspaper that is similar in character to The Onion.

Eckhart Consulting

This group works with industry professionals to provide pro bono consulting services to campus organizations, nonprofits, and professional entities.

Rugby (Men’s and Women's)

These two teams comprise a sport club dedicated to rugby.
